Be Healthy: it’s that simple
LOSE 10 LBS IN ONE DAY WITH THE ORANGE JUICE DIET!! You can lose 20 pounds by the end of the week just by eating ice cream! Eat everything and anything you want every day and still lose weight – just sprinkle our magic pixie dust on it!
We all want a quick fix to the difficult questions, don’t we?
I was reading a great article this week on how elite triathletes – people who swim, bike, and run over 140 miles in one day – fuel their bodies and maintain their weight for such grueling competition. When excitedly started the article based on a
Harvard School of Public Health Study, I thought his would have to be two parts science, two parts will power, and a little bit of that magic fairy dust. I was braced for an article that was so in-depth and scientific that I wouldn’t even understand it. I will let you in on the secret, so maybe you can decipher it for me. Here it is:
Eat more high quality food (fruits, vegetables, grains)
& eat less low quality foods (potato chips, French fries, fast food)
Wait…. What? That’s it?
Yeah. That’s it.
So when I finally recuperated from the sheer force of this simplicity,
I started to realize how many other things in life can be just that simple,
once you factor out our human tendency to complicate matters.
Mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual health can really
be maintained by boiling down a few simple premises:
Make more good decisions than bad decisions.
Trust your decisions.
If you make a bad decision, learn from it and make a better one next time.
Eat less, move more.
Drink more water than anything else each day.
Manage stress through living a balanced life. Relax.
Maintain healthy communication with those close to you. When it isn’t healthy, at least argue fairly.
Of course, each one of these can be broken down a little bit more; but I’m betting if you engage in these basics premises more times than not each day, you’re going to do pretty well.
Unfortunately, this is where that whole “human” thing comes
in – our tendency to complicate, over think, rationalize… our tendency to make
messes in our lives from time to time, all those things can get in the way of
trying to maintain that balanced healthy lifestyle.
When that happens – when you find yourself unable to engage in these premises, get help. Talk to
someone; a friend, spouse, peer, clergy, or professional. Read a book, do some research, at the very
least check it out on Wikipedia…
It really can be that simple. And when it’s not, ask for help.
